From Pond to Plate: Sustainability Concerns of Global Shrimp Cultivation, Logistics, and Economy, with Reflections on Eastern Indian Aquaculture

| Abstract | Global shrimp aquaculture, a sector valued at over US$69 billion annually, stands at a critical juncture between its promise of economic development and its documented environmental and social costs. This review paper examines this paradox through the lens of Eastern India's shrimp industry, a major contributor to global production. It synthesises existing literature to analyse the triple burden of environmental degradation, economic precarity for smallholders, and stringent compliance demands that define modern shrimp cultivation. The findings reveal a significant disconnect between theoretical sustainability frameworks, such as Better Management Practices (BMPs), and on-the-ground realities, where high adoption costs and fragmented policy enforcement lead to selective implementation. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed the vulnerabilities inherent in the supply chain, from seed production to export logistics. This paper concludes that the path to a truly sustainable shrimp industry in Eastern India requires a radical rethinking of governance models, moving beyond top-down regulation towards inclusive, location-specific policies that financially empower small-scale farmers and integrate ecological and social welfare into the core of economic planning. |
