Abstract Title:- A correlational Study on Inter Pregnancy Interval and the Risk of Adverse outcome on Women Undergoing Medical Termination of Pregnancy at Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Jamuhar, Rohtas, Bihar.
Background:- In recent years, the inter pregnancy interval has emerged as a critical factor in determining mental health outcomes. Short or excessively long interval between pregnancies have associated with physical and psychological risks. Medical Termination of Pregnancy, while medically safe when conducted under proper conditions, becomes more complex and risk-prone in women with inadequate pregnancy spacing. Despite national efforts to promote reproductive health, awareness and practice of optimal IPI remain insufficient in many regions, including rural Bihar. This study was designed to explore the correlation between IPI and the occurance of adverse physical and psychological outcomes among women undergoing Medical Termination of Pregnancy.
Aim:- To assess the relationship between Inter-Pregnancy Interval and the risk of adverse outcomes among women undergoing Medical Termination of Pregnancy and provide evidence-based recommendations for reproductive health counselling.
Objectives :- To determine the frequency and distribution of various inter-pregnancy interval among women undergoing Medical Termination of Pregnancy .
To assess the physical and psychological complications reported post-MTP in relation to their IPI.
To establish the statistical correlation between Inter Pregnancy Interval and adverse maternal outcomes.
To provide evidence-based recommendations for nurses and healthcare providers.
Methods:- A quantitative, correlational research design was adopted. A total of 60 women undergoing Medical Termination of Pregnancy at Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Jamuhar were selected through purposive sampling. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire including demographic profile, reproductive history, tools to assess physical and psychological outcomes. Statistical tools including Pearson correlation and descriptive statistics were used for analysis.
Result:- The study revealed that 33.3% of the participants had a short-inter-pregnancy interval(<6 months), and 66.6% experienced one or more adverse outcomes. Physical complications like Hemorrhage(20%) and infection (16.6%) were common in women with shorter spacing. Similarly, 66.6% reported some form of psychological distress. A strong negative correlation (r= - associated with higher risks.
Conclusion :- The findings emphasize the urgent need for reproductive counseling and post-Medical Termination of Pregnancy education regarding optimal pregnancy spacing. Nurses and healthcare professionals play a vital role in implementing these measures through timely interventions. The study recommends integrating Inter Pregnancy Interval. The study recommends integrating Inter Pregnancy Interval awareness in routine reproductive health education to reduce complications improve maternal outcomes.
