Abstract Effective communication is essential for delivering high-quality healthcare, yet it remains a persistent challenge that impacts patient outcomes, staff performance, and organizational efficiency. From a management perspective, failures in communication can compromise patient safety, obstruct strategic choices, restrict resource distribution, and weaken interdisciplinary cooperation. This paper provides a managerial review of communication challenges in healthcare, using a narrative approach informed by systematic and scoping literature reviews.
The review identifies several key barriers to effective communication, including interpersonal misunderstandings between healthcare providers and patients, rigid organizational hierarchies that limit information sharing, technological issues stemming from electronic health records and telemedicine platforms, and cultural or linguistic diversity within healthcare teams. The results emphasize the vital part manager’s play in tackling these issues through leadership, standardized communication methods, staff education, and the strategic application of digital resources.
Furthermore, the review highlights the importance of cultivating an open organizational culture and implementing structured communication strategies, such as the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) framework and inter-professional workshops, to reduce risks and enhance safety. In practical terms, healthcare managers ought to incorporate communication-centered interventions into their operational frameworks to develop patient trust, reduce medical mistakes, and enhance service quality. By consolidating managerial insights, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on healthcare communication and provides a foundation for developing policies and practices to address existing gaps.
