Rural setup in Night of the Scorpion by Nissim Ezekiel

Author(s) Mr. Lalrinchhana Rinchhana
Country India
Abstract Nissim Ezekiel was a Jewish poet, playwright, editor, critic, and performer from India.
He was born in Mumbai on December 14, 1924. He was a leading figure in Indian poetry of the early modern era. He was not a poet of the heart, but of the intellect. He plays a
significant role in Indian English writing after independence. As a prominent poet, editor, and sporadic dramatist, he has had a significant impact. The poem Night of the Scorpion describes the poet's mother's love for her children as well as how she managed to flee after being stung by a scorpion. Night of the Scorpion is filled with images of the dark powers of evil, the night itself, the huge scorpion shadows on the sun-baked walls, and the diabolic tail of the scorpion all allude to evil. The poem discusses the relevant question of what can defeat evil. The selfless love of a mother prevailed where superstition, reason, and religion failed.
Keywords Rural, background, scorpion, incantation, insects, peasants, superstitions, mother’s love.
