Abstract This study investigates the water quality and fish variety of Bhopal's Upper and Shahpura Lakes, two vital urban freshwater bodies that sustain local livelihoods and biodiversity. Using conventional netting methods, thirteen fish species were identified, including invasive Oreochromis mossambicus and native species like Labeo rohita and Cyprinus carpio. Important physico-chemical characteristics, such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), hardness, alkalinity, and transparency, were measured in water samples taken from various locations. Even though the majority of the values fell below the CPCB/BIS-permissible limits, some regions displayed ecological stress, particularly Upper Lake Site II's raised pH and Shahpura Lake Site II's decreased clarity and pronounced organic odour. To preserve the biological integrity and biodiversity of these lakes, these findings emphasise the critical need for conservation initiatives, pollution control measures, and ongoing environmental monitoring.
