A pilot study on effect of perceived uncertainty of childbirth on quality of life and foetal profile in primigravid women in Tertiary care hospitals, Kolkata, West Bengal.

| Abstract | A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on the effects of perceived uncertainty of childbirth on quality of life and foetal outcome in primigravid women. The sample comprises 60 primigravid women. A Structured questionnaire for demographic characteristics and a Semi-structured interview schedule to assess the level of Perceived Uncertainty and WHO-BREF scale (2000) were used for Quality of life and an Ultrasonography report for assessment of foetal development according to the gestational age of the primigravid women. Results: A non-probability purposive simple random sampling technique was used to conduct the research study. The result revealed that out of 60 primigravid women, moderate (75%), and severe 10% and 15% poor levels of uncertainty. and 71.7% had average levels and 13.3% had good Quality Of Life. The correlation coefficient value was 0.694, indicating a positive relationship between the Perceived Uncertainty and Quality of Life in Primigravid women. The pilot study result revealed that Tool I (Part-A) regarding demographic data. There is 100% agreement in 12 items (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.11, 12 & 13), 85% agreement in 2 items (13 & 14), and 81% agreement in item 10, which is modified as per experts’ suggestions. The content validity index of Tool 1 (part-A) is calculated and its value is (0.96+0.97+0.96)/3=0.96, exceeding the referring value 0.83, which indicates the validity of Tool I (part-A) is acceptable. The reliability of Tool I (Part-B) on Perceived Uncertainty of Childbirth was calculated by Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient method and the value was 0.87, which indicates the overall good internal consistency, meaning it is acceptable. The reliability of Tool II on Quality of Life in primigravid women was calculated by Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient method and the value was 0.93. Hence, Tool II is found to be highly accepted. Tool III on the assessment of foetal growth according to gestational age by checking the Ultrasound report of primigravid women was calculated by Spearman-Brown reliability on the Split-Half method and the ‘r’ value was 0.72. So, Tool III is found to be acceptable. |
