Abstract The banking sector in India presents a fascinating dichotomy between public and private institutions, each carrying distinct operational philosophies and performance trajectories. This review examines the comparative financial performance of public sector banks (PSBs) and private sector banks in India, drawing from contemporary research to understand their relative strengths and weaknesses. Through analysis of multiple studies, we explore key performance indicators including profitability ratios, asset quality measures, operational efficiency metrics, and risk management capabilities. The literature reveals that while private banks generally demonstrate superior profitability and efficiency, public sector banks maintain advantages in terms of reach and financial inclusion. However, the performance gap has been narrowing in recent years, particularly following banking reforms and consolidation efforts. This review synthesizes findings from eighteen research papers to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape of Indian banking performance dynamics.
