| Abstract | The financial services industry has witnessed a historical transformation in the past decade with Internet banking as a force to reckon with transforming consumer interaction with financial institutions. The review examines the extent to which Internet banking has affected traditional financial institutions in terms of challenges and opportunities by this technology revolution. Based on a review of recent literature, we reflect on how business models are being transformed in traditional banks, how customer needs are changing, and the response strategies required to lead in the ever-expanding digital space. By combining insights from various studies, the review coheres into operational, strategic, and cultural change that needs to be implemented by traditional banks to coexist with digital-born competitors. Our results mirror that while digital disruption causes fundamental issues for the traditional banking business model, it brings opportunities for cost reduction, innovation, and customer engagement. The assimilation of digital technology is only effective if it adopts a systematic approach encompassing technological infrastructure, organisational culture, and customer-driven delivery of services. |
