| Abstract | We construct our identity through the stories we tell about ourselves, how we let our experiences define us. This narrative however can change after unforeseen circumstances. Disability puts a question on one’s identity & social functioning. This paper aims to understand how physicaldisability shapes the narrative of those who are disabled. It also explores the relation between social support and resilience. Perception of social support, positive or negative, considerably influences self image. These life experiences together determine resilience and affect recovery.Rooted in various theories like social model of disability and resilience theory, this paper looks into the social and psychological impacts of disability. To understand these dynamics, a qualitative study was carried out using semi structured interviews from those with physical disabilities from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds. To complement the narratives, brief standardized scales- The multidimensional scale of perceived social support and Brief Resilience scale were used. This narrative based study can help understand those with physical disabilities better, reduce stigma, and start conversations for community focused interventions. This study contributes to the understanding of disability beyond the medical lens, emphasizing identity, meaning-making, and social connection as pillars of psychological well-being. |
