Abstract This paper explores the gendered dimensions of Hindu fasting practices (vrats), with a particular focus on women in Patna,Bihar. Drawing from qualitative data collected through interviews and observations, the study investigates the socio-cultural, religious, and psychological motivations behind women’s participation in vrats. The research employs Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, Antonio Gramsci’s concept of cultural hegemony, and Emile Durkheim’s notion of collective consciousness to analyse the persistence of gendered ritual obligations. Findings suggest that while vrats provide spiritual fulfilment and a sense of agency for women, they also reinforce patriarchal norms by placing the religious burden disproportionately on them. The analysis demonstrates that fasting practices serve as a site for both conformity and subtle resistance, where women navigate tradition, religious authority, and identity. The study concludes by discussing how these gendered observances both reflect and shape the broader socio-religious landscape in India.
