Abstract This study explores the phenomenon of intergenerational occupational mobility among the Meitei Pangal community in Manipur, a socially and economically disadvantaged group in India. Intergenerational mobility refers to the degree to which individuals’ social and economic status changes in relation to that of their parents. It reflects the opportunities available in society for upward mobility, equality, and development. This study examines intergenerational mobility among Manipuri Muslims (Meitei Pangal), a minority community in Manipur with distinct socio-cultural characteristics. Despite their historical and cultural significance, Meitei Pangals have faced significant challenges in accessing better occupational opportunities, leading to persistent poverty and social exclusion. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research investigates the extent and patterns of intergenerational occupational mobility among Meitei Pangals, examining the factors that facilitate or hinder social mobility. Findings: suggest that while some Meitei Pangals have experienced upward occupational mobility, many others continue to face significant barriers to social mobility, including limited access to education and job opportunities. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions to address the structural and cultural factors that perpetuate occupational stagnation among Meitei Pangals. This research contributes to our understanding of intergenerational mobility and social inequality in India, highlighting the importance of considering the experiences of marginalized communities like Meitei Pangals. The findings have implications for policy and practice, emphasizing the need for inclusive and equitable development initiatives that address the unique challenges faced by this community.
