Equality and Dignity: The Socio-Legal Journey of Transgender Persons in Gujarat, India

Author(s) Fr. Lawrence Louis Rodrigues, Prof. Dr. P. Lakshmi
Country India
Abstract This article explores the socio-legal journey of transgender persons in Gujarat, focusing on the gap between legal recognition and actual implementation. It analyses the NALSA v. Union of India (2014) judgment and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, highlighting contradictions—especially on self-identification and lack of reservations. Despite legal advances, transgender individuals continue to face systemic barriers in education, healthcare, employment, and legal identity. Based on policy review and field insights, the paper reveals ongoing stigma, discrimination, and neglect. It concludes with actionable recommendations, including implementation of NALSA directives, UNDP guidelines, inclusive education, vocational training, legal aid, and awareness initiatives to ensure transgender persons in Gujarat live with dignity and full citizenship.
