Abstract This study examines the impact of social media on adolescents, adults and the elderly in rural Western Uttar Pradesh. Surveys reveal adolescents prefer Instagram (46%) and YouTube (44%), while adults and the elderly favor YouTube (70.7%) and Facebook (19.5%). Adolescents’ usage has steadily increased since 2014–15, peaking at 72% in 2020–22, whereas adults and elderly show fluctuating patterns. Video viewing and music dominate content consumption, with news more popular among adults and elderly. While adolescents report significant lifestyle changes (68%), most adults and elderly (80.5%) perceive minimal impact. Social media also influences cultural practices and social dynamics across generations.
