A Study on the Origin of the Kokborok Language

Author(s) Mr. Umesh Reang
Country India
Abstract This research paper aims to discuss the origin of the Kokborok language, which is spoken in the Northeastern state of Tripura. The Bodo-Garo group of languages, classified under the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan family, is represented by nine dialect-speaking communities in Tripura, collectively known as Kokborok. The term ‘Kokborok’ means “the language of the people” or “the language of the Borok community”. It is made from two words: Kok, meaning “Language”, and Borok, referring to “People”. Before 1900, the term ‘Kokborok’ was not found in any written records. Instead, British officers used other names with different spellings, such as Mrúng, Tipperah, Tipura, and Tipra to refer to the language. The term “Kokborok” was first introduced by Thakur Radhamohan Debbarma in his book ‘Kok-borok-ma’, which was published in 1900.
Keywords Sino-Tibetan, Tibetu-Burman, Tipperah, Tipura, Kokborok.
