Decoding Pakistan’s elections 2024

Author(s) Mr. Harsh Behere
Country India
Abstract On 8th Feb 2024, Pakistanis voted for the 12th general election in the country’s history. However, the elections were marred with severe tempering of the electoral process by pre- and post-election manipulation by the military. The results have upended all expectations as voters have voted in defiance against the army. Elections conducted after two tumultuous years of political polarisation, economic instability, and troublesome security situations have led to no outright majority. Incumbent government sits at the crisscrossing of a precarious economy, military interventionism in politics, Baloch and Pashtun sub-nationalism, and unease in security dynamics. This issue brief analyses Pakistan’s recent election trends and their implications for India.
