Country India
Abstract This paper aims to address the social and economic challenges faced by the widows in the Rohilkhand region by fostering their empowerment and financial independence. The implementation of the 9th Five-Year Plan also focused on women's empowerment, and this has emerged as a key development strategy in India. Widows are also part of the country and society that should be taken great care of to fulfil the aim of women’s empowerment. Empowering widows is necessary to develop effective strategies for their full welfare. The most popular approach to achieving this aim is the Self-Help Group (SHG) method.
Thus far, the researcher aims to evaluate the contribution of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to the empowerment of widows in Bareilly district, focusing on either the "gender effect" or the "improvement in income.". A total of 30 widows who are members of the self-help group and 20 widows who are not members have been selected for the study. Data were collected from 50 widows using the snowball sampling technique. This paper explores the potential of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to empower widows in Bareilly District, Uttar Pradesh, India, specifically focusing on income generation. SHGs provide a supportive network for widows, equipping them with essential skills and access to microfinance. This financial independence fosters economic empowerment and social inclusion. By empowering widows to become self-reliant and financially secure, the initiative improves their well-being and contributes to the overall economic development and social cohesion of Bareilly District, Uttar Pradesh. It highlights the positive impact of SHGs on widows' confidence, self-esteem, and overall well-being. Additionally, the paper explores successful case studies from Bareilly and references relevant government initiatives promoting SHGs, like the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). By promoting SHGs, Bareilly can empower widows, enhance their livelihoods, and drive local economic development.
