| Abstract | The rapid digitalisation of business ecosystems has exposed startups to an unprecedented scale of cyber threats, making cybersecurity a critical determinant of survival and growth. Traditional security frameworks, while reliable in structured environments, often lack the adaptability and speed required to counter evolving attack vectors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative force in this domain, offering startups real-time threat detection, predictive analytics, and automated response capabilities that align with the agility and scalability demands of cloud-native ventures. This paper explores the role of AI-powered cybersecurity in enabling startups to strengthen defences despite limited financial and human resources. It highlights key advantages such as continuous monitoring, reduced dependency on large security teams, and improved cost efficiency. At the same time, it critically examines risks and limitations, including false positives, algorithmic bias, affordability challenges for early-stage ventures, and the dangers of over-reliance on automation. Comparative insights between AI-driven and traditional approaches are provided to underscore differences in detection, speed, adaptability, and cost. Emerging threats, such as deepfake phishing and AI-generated malware, are also discussed, emphasising the dual role of AI as both a defender and an enabler of sophisticated attacks. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for startups, advocating phased adoption, hybrid AI-human models, and adherence to ethical and regulatory frameworks. Ultimately, it calls for interdisciplinary collaboration between technologists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to ensure secure and sustainable innovation in the startup ecosystem. |
