Abstract This study focuses on the social interaction behavior of adolescents belonging to different socio-economic statuses (SES). Social interaction during adolescence is vital, as it facilitates the development of communication skills, cooperation, leadership, and emotional regulation, which are fundamental for personality growth and societal integration. Since adolescents’ interaction patterns may vary with socio-economic background, this research examines whether differences exist in their classroom, school, family, social, and national-level interactions.
The study was conducted on 600 adolescents from 12 secondary schools in Udaipur district, equally divided into high-SES and low-SES groups based on parents’ income certificates. The survey method was applied, and a self-constructed Social Interaction Behavior Scale was used, covering five dimensions: classroom, school, family, national, and social interaction. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and t-test.
Results revealed that high-SES students scored high in classroom, school, and family interactions, while their scores at the national and social levels were above average. They were found to be disciplined in classrooms, active in school events, respectful to parents, and involved in national awareness campaigns. Low-SES students also demonstrated high levels of classroom, school, and family interaction, with above-average scores at the national level and high scores at the social level. They actively participated in school prayers, games, cleanliness drives, vaccination awareness, and community programs. Comparative analysis showed significant differences in classroom, school, family, and social interaction, with low-SES students often displaying stronger participation at the social level. However, at the national level, no significant difference was observed, indicating equal involvement of both groups in campaigns and public welfare programs.
The study concludes that socio-economic status influences adolescents’ interaction patterns, though both groups show commendable engagement in various domains. High-SES students exhibit structured, disciplined behavior within classrooms and families, while low-SES students display stronger community involvement and tolerance. Educationally, these findings underline the importance of promoting inclusive social activities in schools, enabling students of diverse backgrounds to interact harmoniously and develop mutual respect. The research highlights that fostering balanced social interaction is crucial for preparing adolescents as responsible, cooperative, and socially sensitive citizens.
