Abstract This study investigates the influence of scientific attitude on the academic achievement of students in the science faculty. The modern era is marked by rapid technological advancement and scientific thinking, requiring young learners to cultivate rationality, curiosity, open-mindedness, and freedom from superstition. Recognizing the importance of scientific temperament in fostering objective and innovative thought, this research explores whether such attitudes differ across rural and urban students, government and private school students, as well as male and female students, and further assesses how these attitudes affect academic performance.
The study adopted a survey method, selecting a representative sample of 600 higher secondary students (300 rural and 300 urban) from 30 schools in Udaipur district through random sampling. The participants were further divided equally into government/private institutions and male/female categories. Data were collected using a self-constructed Scientific Attitude Scale covering six dimensions—curiosity, critical thinking, open-mindedness, investigatory tendency, dislike for superstition, and orderliness—while academic achievement was measured using students’ annual Class XI results. Statistical techniques including mean, standard deviation, t-test, and correlation were applied.
The findings reveal that students generally scored positively on all six dimensions of scientific attitude, indicating that curiosity, investigatory drive, and rational thinking were well developed. Significant differences were observed across demographic variables: urban students displayed higher scientific attitude than rural counterparts, private school students scored better than government school peers, and male students showed stronger scientific temperament compared to females. Importantly, the correlation analysis demonstrated a positive and significant relationship (r = 0.677) between scientific attitude and academic achievement, suggesting that students with higher scientific orientation tended to perform better academically.
The study concludes that cultivating scientific attitude leads to enhanced academic success by promoting logical reasoning, structured learning, and an investigative approach to problems. Implications include the need for educators to integrate scientific inquiry methods, discourage rote learning, and emphasize experimentation and rational analysis in school pedagogy. By fostering scientific thinking, students can overcome superstitions, develop innovative skills, and align themselves with global technological progress. The research highlights that nurturing scientific attitude is not only vital for scholastic achievement but also for preparing scientifically literate, rational, and progressive citizens.
