| Abstract | This research paper titled “Food Symbolism and Socioeconomic Disparities in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist” analyses the food theme in Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist," emphasizing the symbolic role that food plays in bringing poverty, injustice, and survival to light. It examines key food references and looks at important allusions to food, like the scene in the workhouse where the sparse food symbolizes hard living conditions, Oliver's plea for additional food, and moments of hunger and despair, along with the characters' turn to stealing. The socioeconomic themes of "Oliver Twist" are examined in this article by using food symbolism. It draws attention to the sharp contrast between the lavish feasts of the affluent and the meager rations provided to the underprivileged, highlighting the profound social and economic divide that existed in Victorian society. The significance of food in Oliver's pivotal moments, like the Christmas dinner scene at Mr. Brownlow's, is also examined in this article. |
