| Abstract | Aravind Adiga’s The Last Man in Tower (2011) is a powerful exploration of the tensions between human values and material ambition in a rapidly modernising India. Set in the modest housing block of Vishram Society, the novel dramatises the lure of money offered by a property developer and the single act of resistance by one man, Masterji, a retired teacher. While his neighbours embrace the dream of wealth and new beginnings, Masterji refuses, holding onto the memories of his family and the dignity of his principles. This decision transforms him from a respected elder into an outcast and, finally, a victim. Through this story, Adiga brings out major themes such as greed, the collapse of community, the conflict between memory and progress, the power of violence, and the tragic loneliness of resistance. This article offers a thematic analysis of the novel with direct references to the text, arguing that Adiga portrays Mumbai not simply as a city of opportunity but also as a moral battlefield where the cost of development is measured in human lives. |
