Business Practices of Customs Brokerage Firms in Cebu

Author(s) Mr. Richmond Liaz Linao, Dr. Ily Abella
Country Philippines
Abstract This study examined the business practices of customs brokerage firms in Cebu, Philippines, aiming to create a Business Model Canvas to guide the industry. Data were gathered from 46 licensed and accredited customs brokers through an online questionnaire. The analysis revealed that most firms operate as sole proprietorships with 1 to 10 employees and varying transaction volumes. Key practices, such as client relations, documentation, and compliance, were highly implemented across firms, although regular staff training and audits were less consistent. Major challenges included delayed payments, price competition, rising compliance costs, system downtimes, and shipping delays. No significant differences in practices were found based on firm characteristics. The study developed a Business Model Canvas for customs brokerage firms and offered recommendations to improve competitiveness and sustainability in Cebu's brokerage industry.
