| Abstract | ABSTRACT : In Ayurveda, Netra rogas refers to wide range of disease affecting the eyes. The management of Netra Rogas aims at pacifying disturbed doshas, maintaining their equilibrium, and rejuvenating the structures of the eye. Ayurveda emphasizes that true healing begins with Shodhana followed by Shamana measures. Acharya Sushruta has described Basti is having both Samshamana and Samshodhana action. While it is recommended for disorders involving Pitta, Kapha, and Sarvadhatu Ashrita Vyadhi, it is regarded as the most effective therapy for Vata disorders. Basti acts on all channels of the body, including Urdhwajatrugata Vyadhi, Koshtha, Marma, and Shakha. In his writings, Sushruta states “Chakshu preenayathi”, highlighting that Basti Chikitsa can be advocated in vascular and neurological disorders of the eye. Many retinal pathologies have a strong association with systemic diseases, leading to severe ocular consequences. Considering this, the present work aims to explore lesser-known Basti formulations described in Ayurvedic classics for Netra Roga, with special reference to retinal disorders like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal Vascular Occlusions. |
