| Abstract | This paper endeavors to explore the representation of trauma and displacement in selected novels of two eminent novelists namely Amitav Ghosh and Rita Chowdhury. AmitavGhosh occupies a very distinct place in the domain of Indian English literature. He was born in Calcutta and grew up in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In this study his award winning novel “The Shadow Lines” have been taken into account. It is an attempt to explore the trauma of displacement of the characters of the novel, and how those memories haunt these characters. Rita Chowdhury on the other hand is an acclaimed novelist from Assam, India. She was born in 1960 at Nampong in Tirap District of Arunachal and began writing in 1981, during the Assam Movement. For the purpose of the study her novel “Chinatown Days” has been taken into consideration. It is one of her prominent contribution which was published as “Makam” in Assamese in 2010 and then translated into English by herself. This research employs a qualitative approach to explore the themes of trauma of displacement in Amitav Ghosh’s “The Shadow Lines” and Rita Chowdhury’s “Chinatown Days”. Through close textual analysis, the study examines the experiences of key characters of both the novels. |
