Abstract Mass media is the life blood of a thriving democracy and a healthy society in modern times. It provides a unique platform of communication to both the ruler and the ruled and, at the same time safeguards the interests of the common man, which is of prime importance for a flourishing democratic society. Mass media is expected to strictly follow the ethical values of objectivity, truthfulness, fair play, transparency and honesty. But with the passing of time, this media has made a distance with its core ethical values, for which it was accorded an acclaimed position in the society. As a result, the formal media lost its most valuable asset i.e. public trust., subsequently creating a vacuum in the field of mass communication..

Social Media, which is the result of modern technological innovations, tried to fill this vacuum, despite its poor credibility. Although people are aware of its poor credibility quotient, still they are opting for it. And today this media has become an inseparable part of one’s life.

Against this backdrop, a serious question comes to the fore---
Whether Social Media emerged because Mainstream Media failed people?
The research paper in question delves deep into the matter and based on the interviews of Sr. journalists and media educators, tries to present a logical conclusion, which could provide a better insight on the topic.
