| Abstract | We report a visible-light-driven C–C coupling reaction in aqueous medium facilitated by supramolecular nanocages. Encapsulation of guest molecules within the cavity promotes charge-transfer (CT) state formation, which upon photoexcitation generates transient intermediates such as radical cations and neutral radicals. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy revealed electron transfer (ET) events occurring within 1–3 ps and proton transfer (PT) steps within 10–100 ps, each displaying distinct spectral features. The resulting photo-generated radicals possess nanosecond lifetimes and subsequently couple with partner molecules to yield dimeric products. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report providing direct optical signatures of intermediates of PA derivatives and a complete mechanistic understanding of the photochemical analogue of the Glaser coupling reaction. Importantly, the absence of Pd-centre involvement highlights the potential for designing new supramolecular cavities capable of enabling fully metal-free C–C coupling reactions with prospective scalability for industrial applications |
