NAVIGATING BETWEEN DUAL IDENTITIES: THE STRUGGLE FOR VALIDATION IN MRS. SEN’S

Author(s) Chandrima Das, Dr. Rajendra Singh Chouhan
Country India
Abstract This paper will explore the theme of identity crisis in Jhumpa Lahiri’s short stories, “Mrs Sen’s” and “Third and final Continent”. With the advent of globalization, the movement of people from one place to another becomes prominent, results a large number of migrations. It creates syncretism in regard of identity. One good thing about post-colonialism is that it brings up the issue of diasporic identity and how the protagonist's cultural mix with the colonizer generates a new culture. Eliot knows about Mrs. Sen's fixation on her house and traditional practices, and Jhumpa Lahiri has deftly shown how hard it is for women like her to establish a presence and identity in both her home and a foreign nation. Mrs. Sen has been pitted against her husband since he was a babysitter, and Eliot has always understood this. The female characters, such as Mala and Mrs. Sen, dress like traditional Bengali women living abroad by donning saris. Though seemingly insignificant, the topics and points of view discussed by Mrs. Sen bring up important concerns about the subject's culture, identity, status, and situation.
Keywords navigating, identities, Mrs. Sen’s,cultural and traditional.
