How Reels (Short-Form content) Are Reshaping Brand Communication Strategies

Abstract The rapid growth of short-form video content has transformed digital marketing, with Instagram Reels emerging as a powerful medium for brand communication. Since their launch in 2020, Reels have shifted the focus from polished, high-production advertisements to authentic, engaging, and relatable storytelling formats. This paper explores how brands leverage Reels to humanise their identity, connect with diverse audiences, and amplify visibility beyond their existing follower base. Reels’ algorithm-driven reach has enabled both small businesses and established corporations to compete on relatively equal ground, democratizing brand exposure. Moreover, the immediacy of feedback through likes, shares, and comments provides marketers with actionable insights, accelerating the cycle of testing and adaptation. However, this transformation also brings challenges. Reliance on platform algorithms creates volatility in reach, while the pressure for continuous creativity can lead to content fatigue. Furthermore, high engagement does not always translate into direct sales, complicating ROI measurement. Despite these limitations, the future of Reels in brand communication appears promising, with emerging integrations of artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and social commerce enhancing personalisation and interactivity. Overall, Reels represent more than just a social media trend—they are reshaping the way brands build trust, foster relatability, and initiate conversations in an oversaturated digital space. For sustained success, brands must remain agile, authentic, and audience-centric, strategically blending creativity with data-driven insights to navigate the evolving landscape of digital communication.
