| Abstract | Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) has emerged as a crucial paradigm in restructuring education systems to meet the needs of the 21st century. It puts forth environmental awareness, social responsibility, cultural sensitivity, and economic understanding into the core of what is taught and learnt. The chapter discusses the importance of ESD in India, it studies its role in the development of sustainable societies, and put forth methods to bring it into school and higher education curriculums. In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4.7) and the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), the chapter emphasizes the development of competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, ethical reasoning, and participatory decision-making. The approaches covered are interdisciplinary teaching, project-based learning, community engagement, and experiential pedagogies that stimulate learners to bridge classroom learning with real-world problems. By embracing these methodologies, teachers can foster reflective, responsible, and action-oriented citizens who can work on challenges like climate change, biodiversity conservation, human rights, peace ,non-violence ,gender equality, social equity, and inclusive growth. The chapter discusses innovative practices and the transforming potential of ESD in Indian education. It concludes that promoting sustainable attitudes by education is imperative to ensure national and international sustainability . |
