The Unseen Violence: Deconstructing Terrorism in Siddhartha Deb’s Surface through a Postcolonial Lens

| Abstract | This paper argues that Siddhartha Deb’s novel, Surface (2005), is not a simple political thriller about insurgency but a profound critique of the postcolonial India. Through a rigorous postcolonial theoretical framework, the analysis will deconstruct the monolithic label of “terrorism” applied to armed groups in Northeast India. It will demonstrate how the novel re-frames this violence as a complex symptom of historical neglect, neocolonial exploitation, and the systemic brutality of the corrupt stakeholders of government itself. By examining the protagonist’s journey, the novel’s central metaphors, and its representation of state and subaltern identities, this paper reveals how Deb exposes the “unseen violence” that underpins the turbulent region. The narrative offers an opportunity to critically interrogate the true perpetrators of terror in a fragmented postcolonial landscape. The paper uses key concepts such as the subaltern, neocolonialism, and the critique of the nation-state to provide a nuanced literary and political analysis. |
