| Abstract | Traditional Indian hair care practices, rooted in Ayurveda, have long utilized herbs, oils, and natural ingredients to promote scalp health and hair growth. Although their use declined with the rise of synthetic hair products, these age-old remedies are witnessing a resurgence due to growing awareness of the harmful effects of chemicals and an increasing demand for sustainable, holistic personal care. This review critically examines peer-reviewed literature published between 2006 and 2024, focusing on widely used botanicals such as Amla, Bhringraj, Neem, Ashwagandha, Hibiscus, and Fenugreek. Studies encompassing in vitro, in vivo, and clinical evaluations were included to assess the effects of these ingredients on hair growth, scalp health, and antimicrobial activity. Additionally, market trend analyses and consumer behaviour reports from reliable sources such as IMARC were reviewed to understand evolving demand dynamics. Findings reveal strong scientific support for the efficacy of these traditional herbs: Amla possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; Bhringraj enhances dermal papilla cell activity; and Ashwagandha reduces scalp inflammation. Technological innovations such as phytochemical standardization, nanoencapsulation, and targeted delivery systems have further improved the bioavailability and therapeutic potential of these botanicals. Traditional remedies are increasingly recognized not as alternative options but as evidence-based solutions to modern hair care challenges. The integration of ancestral knowledge with contemporary research marks a pivotal shift toward natural, safe, and sustainable practices that benefit both health and cultural heritage. |
