Ethical Issues in Advertisement: A Philosophical Approach

| Abstract | Advertising has become an inseparable part of modern life, shaping consumer choices and cultural values alike. While it can inform and promote economic activity, it often raises profound ethical concerns. This paper examines advertising through a philosophical perspective, highlighting issues of deception, manipulation, stereotyping, exploitation of vulnerable groups, and digital-age challenges such as privacy violations. By focusing upon ethical theories—including utilitarianism, intuitionism, Kantian duty ethics, and virtue theory, —it argues that advertising practices must be evaluated not only for their economic effectiveness but also for their moral legitimacy. Central to this analysis is the role of critical thinking, which empowers individuals to question assumptions, identify fallacies, and protect their autonomy against manipulation. The paper concludes that safeguarding ourselves from deceptive advertising requires both personal responsibility and collective regulation, grounded in the philosophical values of truth, dignity, and rational freedom. |
