| Abstract | This study aimed to identify distinct motivational profiles among elite table tennis players and examine their relationship with demographic factors. A sample of 560 national-level Indian table tennis players completed the Achievement Motivations Scale for Sporting Environments (AMSSE). A two-step cluster analysis was performed on the six motivation subscales (MSO, MFO, MSC, MFC, MST, MFT). The analysis revealed two distinct and meaningful motivational profiles: Cluster 1, "The High-Approach Profile," characterized by high scores on all approach-success dimensions and low scores on avoidance-failure dimensions. Cluster 2, "The Cautious-Competitor Profile,," exhibited a more balanced motivational pattern, characterized by moderate approach motivation and significantly higher avoidance-failure tendencies, particularly in competitive situations. A subsequent chi-square analysis found no significant association between cluster membership and gender or age (p > .05), suggesting these motivational profiles transcend demographic lines. The findings indicate that elite athletes are not a psychologically homogenous group. Instead, their success may be driven by different underlying motivational mindsets. These results have significant practical implications, highlighting the need for coaches to move beyond demographic assumptions and implement individualized psychological strategies tailored to an athlete's specific motivational profile. |
