Evaluating the Potential of Biochar as a Landfill Liner for Leachate Prevention

| Abstract | The primary aim of this project is to design and evaluate a landfill liner system using biochar as the key material. Landfills generate a liquid byproduct known as leachate, which contains a range of harmful contaminants capable of polluting nearby groundwater and soil if not properly managed. Traditional landfill liners, typically made from synthetic materials, are effective at containing leachate but are often costly and may pose long-term environmental risks. In contrast, biochar—a carbon-rich substance derived from the thermal decomposition of organic matter—offers a more sustainable alternative. This study specifically focuses on biochar produced from sewage sludge, highlighting its high porosity and strong adsorption capacity as potential advantages in landfill applications. Laboratory-scale testing will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of swage sludge-derived biochar as a liner material for leachate containment. |
