Author(s) Dr. K.Srinivas

Abstract Globalisation, which gained momentum toward the end of the 20th century, has transformed the industrial landscape by compelling nations to integrate their domestic economies with the global markets. This process has intensified competitive pressures, making technological advancement a prerequisite for survival. Indian Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), despite contributing significantly to GDP, employment, and exports, face acute challenges in aligning with global technological standards. The Indian textile industry, predominantly MSME-driven, exemplifies this struggle. As one of the oldest manufacturing sectors, it continues to be plagued by technological obsolescence, low productivity, and limited capacity to meet evolving global quality benchmarks. In the era of globalization, these constraints have made survival akin to “racing against time.” This paper examines the nature and extent of technological obsolescence in the Indian textile MSMEs, analyses interventions aimed at technology upgradation. Drawing form sectoral data and case evidence, it proposes strategic pathways to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian textile MSMEs through innovation, skill development, and targeted policy support.
