Changing Patterns of Family Structures: A Sociological Perspective

Abstract Within the past several decades, various family structures have changed greatly around the world. The traditional nuclear and extended family structures have been used less, and have transformed into new forms such as single-parent families, non-married families, blended families, same-sex families, and childless families. These changes are representative of more extensive social, economic, cultural, and technological change: more individuality, different roles for gender, delays in marrying age, higher divorce rates, and higher acceptance of various family structures. Globalization and urbanization are contributing to the decline of traditional family structures, particularly in quickly developing societies. This specific article will identify and describe the biggest drivers behind these changes to family structures, and their effect on social connectedness, childhood and adolescent outcomes, and families across generations. Based on research from the field of sociology and demographic research, we will view changing family structures as both challenges, and opportunities. In doing so, the paper will argue, despite the changes to traditional family structures, the ability to provide emotional support, caregiving, and socialization are essential. Understanding the changes in family structures will help develop social policies and assistance systems that are more inclusive of various family structures.
