Agro-Tourism as a Strategy for Rural Livelihood Diversification: A Case Study of Bhojpur District, Bihar

Abstract This study examines the potential of agro-tourism as a mechanism for rural livelihood diversification in the Bhojpur district of Bihar, an agriculturally prosperous yet economically vulnerable region. Agriculture continues to be the backbone of the rural economy, but heavy dependence on seasonal cultivation and shrinking farm profitability have made income diversification imperative. Agro-tourism, which integrates agricultural practices with tourism activities, has increasingly been recognized as a strategy capable of providing supplementary income, generating employment, and fostering entrepreneurship within farming communities.
The research adopts an exploratory case study design and is based exclusively on secondary data. Official district statistical handbooks, government policy reports, tourism and agriculture department publications, and peer-reviewed literature serve as the principal sources of information. In addition, existing case studies and documented evidence from similar rural contexts have been critically reviewed to provide comparative insights. The reliance on secondary data enables the study to map broader patterns and trends in the development of agro-tourism in Bhojpur without the limitations of small sample surveys.
Findings derived from the synthesis of secondary evidence indicate that agro-tourism has created alternative revenue streams for rural households, reduced out-migration by providing local employment opportunities, and encouraged entrepreneurial ventures such as farm-stays, local handicraft outlets, and agro-based food services. Moreover, it contributes to the preservation and promotion of Bhojpuri cultural heritage through folk performances and traditional cuisine. At the same time, the literature highlights persistent challenges, including inadequate physical infrastructure, weak digital and marketing linkages, and limited institutional support in Bihar compared to more advanced states in agro-tourism.
Overall, the study suggests that while agro-tourism remains at a nascent stage in Bhojpur, it holds significant promise for strengthening rural resilience and ensuring more sustainable livelihood strategies, provided enabling policies and infrastructural investments are undertaken.
