Unveiling the Indian Knowledge System: A Comprehensive Exploration of Concepts and Applications

Author(s) Dr. Sharad Suman Mishra
Country India
Abstract The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) represents one of humanity's most comprehensive intellectual traditions, offering holistic frameworks that integrate science, philosophy, and spirituality across millennia of continuous development. This chapter provides a systematic analysis of IKS, tracing its evolution from Vedic foundations through contemporary applications in education, healthcare, governance, and sustainable development. Through critical examination of core concepts including dharma, karma, yoga, Ayurveda, and Vastu Shastra, this work demonstrates IKS's capacity to address twenty-first-century challenges including climate change, mental health crises, and social inequality.

Despite facing methodological and epistemological critiques regarding scientific validation and cultural inclusivity, recent policy initiatives such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and growing global recognition position IKS as a vital contributor to transdisciplinary knowledge creation. Contemporary research reveals significant progress in integrating artificial intelligence with traditional medicine, developing standardized analytical methods for traditional formulations, and creating digital platforms for knowledge preservation and dissemination. The chapter argues that IKS's emphasis on ethical harmony, ecological balance, and holistic well-being offers essential frameworks for navigating contemporary global complexities while maintaining cultural authenticity and intellectual rigor.
