| Abstract | The present study investigates the self-concept of students enrolled in Higher Secondary Schools within the Jammu District, with a focus on how gender and locality influence various dimensions of self-concept. The research aims to assess whether significant differences exist in the self-concept of boys and girls across six key areas: behaviour, intellectual and school status, anxiety, physical appearance and attributes, popularity, and happiness and satisfaction. In addition, the study explores whether the self-concept of students varies based on their locality (urban or rural) and examines the interactional effect of gender and locality on self-concept. The sample consists of students from various higher secondary schools selected through a stratified sampling technique. Standardized tools were used to measure the different dimensions of self-concept. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques, including two-way ANOVA. Findings reveal significant gender-based differences in specific areas of self-concept, notable disparities based on locality, and a meaningful interaction effect between gender and locality on certain dimensions of self-concept. The study provides insights into the psychosocial development of adolescents and emphasizes the need for context-sensitive educational and psychological interventions. |
