AI-Driven Platform Cooperatives: Redefining the Gig Economy through Decentralized Business Models

| Abstract | The gig economy has expanded rapidly through digital platforms that rely on artificial intelligence to manage labor processes. While these systems create efficiency and flexibility, they also deepen precarity, opacity, and unequal power relations for workers. This paper examines AI-driven platform cooperatives as a democratic alternative to investor-owned platforms. Grounded in cooperative economics, AI ethics, and sociotechnical systems theory, the study explores how decentralized governance, blockchain-enabled accountability, and privacy-preserving data practices can transform gig work. Drawing on secondary research and global case studies, it highlights the opportunities of AI-enabled cooperatives in promoting fairness, transparency, and worker participation, while also identifying challenges of scale, funding, and regulatory adaptation. The findings suggest that AI-driven cooperatives can not only redistribute economic value more equitably but also set normative benchmarks for digital labor markets, offering a sustainable model that integrates technological innovation with democratic governance and social justice. |
