The Cooperative Movement in Mizoram: A Historical Analysis(1904-2008)

Author(s) Dr. Margaret Zirsangliani Khiangte
Country India
Abstract The study explores the historical development of the cooperative movement in Mizoram from its inception in 1904 to 2008, focusing on its evolution, growth trajectory, and socio-economic contributions. It traces the expansion from three registered societies in 1949 to more than 1,300 by 2008, while identifying distinct phases of growth such as the pre-independence foundation, the insurgency period, the Union Territory transformation, and the consolidation stage in the early 2000s. Employing historical analysis and statistical methods, including compound annual growth rate (CAGR) calculations, the study reveals two contrasting patterns: a period of rapid institutional and membership growth between 1950 and 1996, followed by a phase of decline from 2000 to 2008 with negative growth rates. The findings indicate that political transitions, economic reforms, and social upheavals exerted significant influence on the performance and sustainability of cooperatives in Mizoram. The study concludes that while the movement demonstrated resilience, its long-term sustainability requires modernization, governance reforms, and renewed policy support.
