Social Perspective in Charles Dickens’s The Old Curiosity Shop

| Abstract | Abstract Charles Dickens’s The Old Curiosity Shop delves into the complex social conditions of nineteenth-century England, exposing the moral decay and institutional shortcomings of the era. The story, centered on the tragic journey of Little Nell and her grandfather, offers a critical perspective on the harsh realities faced by the vulnerable in Victorian society — including poverty, exploitation, and the destructive nature of unrestrained capitalism. The dilapidated curiosity shop serves as a compelling metaphor for a society clinging to outdated values and lacking compassion. Through powerful imagery, vivid characterization, and an emotionally resonant narrative, Dickens critiques the socio-economic systems that perpetuate injustice and strip individuals of dignity. By portraying both urban decay and rural simplicity, the novel contrasts environments while emphasizing the moral decline affecting every social tier. This study examines how Dickens employs allegory, pathos, and realism to highlight the pressing need for empathy, reform, and social responsibility, thereby solidifying his legacy as both a literary icon and a tireless critic of Victorian injustices. Keywords: Dickens, Victorian England, social injustice, moral critique, child vulnerability, urban poverty, capitalism, sentimentalism, narrative realism, allegorical fiction, literature, and reform. |
