Abstract Background And Objective: As the global population ages, preserving functional independence and preventing falls among older adults have become pressing public health concerns. Muscular strength, particularly in the trunk and lower extremities, plays a critical role in maintaining balance and physical performance. This study aims to evaluate the influence of trunk muscle strength and lower extremity strength on balance and physical performance in community dwelling elderly.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on community-dwelling elderly participants. Trunk muscle strength was assessed using the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS), while lower extremity strength was evaluated with the 30-Second Chair Stand Test. Balance was measured using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and physical performance was assessed via the Physical Performance Test (PPT). Correlation was performed using Karl Pearson's method.

Result: The results of the pilot study with 15 participants indicated a significant positive correlation between both trunk and lower extremity strength and physical performance scores. Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between trunk and lower extremity strength measures and TUG performance, indicating that reduced strength is associated with poorer balance. These findings suggest that weakness in either muscle group adversely affects overall physical function and stability.

Interpretation And Conclusion: The study concluded that trunk and lower extremity muscle strength are key determinants of balance and physical performance in community-dwelling elderly individuals. The findings support the implementation of integrated strength training programs targeting these areas to reduce fall risk and promote functional independence. Early assessment and intervention may be crucial in preventing decline and enhancing quality of life in aging populations.
