Author(s) Ms. Meenu Dua
Country India
Abstract The present study is an attempt to understand regional variations in Female labour force participation across the country. The three northern states – Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have been considered for the in-depth descriptive and comparative analysis. The study intends to probe into the determinants of much higher Females LFPR in Himachal Pradesh as compared to Punjab and Haryana. Using comparative analysis approach, the study investigates the diverse factors which influence women’s labour force participation. The major determinant variables explored are the occupational distribution of female workforce in the three states, demographic and health indicators, literacy and education level and the violence against women. The secondary data sources used are NSSO Employment-Unemployment Surveys, PLFS Reports, NFHS Reports, UDISE+ 2021-22, AISHE Report 2021-22, Report of Crimes in India, 2022. The findings bring out the fact that more egalitarian norms, lower rate of crime against women, higher enrolment ratio at the level of higher education and better health care services contribute to the higher females’ labour force participation rate in Himachal Pradesh. The results of the study have significant implications for policy makers seeking to promote women’s economic empowerment and reduce regional disparities in labour force participation. The study suggests the targeted approach strategized in accordance with the state’s peculiar needs. Empowering women through health, education and safety against crimes is not just a moral imperative but a sound economic strategy to unlock women’s potential and propel nations forward.
