| Abstract | Background: Proper solid waste management is crucial for environmental health and community well-being, particularly in developing communities where waste disposal practices significantly impact public health outcomes. Understanding community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards solid waste disposal is essential for developing effective waste management interventions. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice towards solid waste disposal among residents of the peri-urban (Zagyuri) community and to examine the relationships between these domains and demographic characteristics. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 98 heads of households in the Zagyuri community using a structured questionnaire. The survey instrument assessed demographic characteristics and measured knowledge (10 items), attitude (10 items), and practice (9 items) towards solid waste disposal using 5-point Likert scales. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests, and correlation analysis. Results: The study included 58 males (59.2%) and 40 females (40.8%), with the majority (38.8%) aged 31-40 years. Most participants were Muslims (80.6%) with tertiary education (43.9%). Mean scores were 3.76 ± 0.56 for knowledge, 3.70 ± 0.66 for attitude, and 3.00 ± 0.69 for practice. Significant differences were found across education levels for all KAP domains (p < 0.05). Strong positive correlations existed between knowledge-attitude (r = 0.528, p < 0.001), knowledge-practice (r = 0.507, p < 0.001), and attitude-practice (r = 0.706, p < 0.001). Conclusion: While residents demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitudes towards solid waste disposal, practice scores were moderate, indicating a knowledge-practice gap. Educational interventions targeting practical waste management skills, particularly among less educated residents, are recommended to improve community waste disposal practices. |
