| Abstract | Gender dysphoria (GD) has recently risen to be a serious public health and social issue, largely among adolescents. Despite the prevalence being documented in international literature, little is known regionally in Southern Italy. This exploratory study aimed to establish the prevalence rate of gender identity concerns and its association with psychological distress among adolescents aged 17 - 18 years in the city of Trapani, Italy. A total of 272 adolescents completed sociodemographic information, Gender Identity/Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults (GIDYQ-AA), and Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R). Descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation was used. There was a significant correlation between individuals' degree of uncertainty about their gender identity, and perceived gender role and have anxiety, feelings of guilt, social isolation and somatic concerns. Adolescents that did not disclose gender identity accuracy raised their uncertainty and desire for medical transition. Adolescents who were satisfied with their gender identity had a negative correlation with their psychological distress scores. The findings highlight a connection between gender identity and mental health and calls for school-based interventions, family education and/or larger representative studies. This exploratory study contributes to understanding GD from a regional Italian perspective. |
