| Abstract | Aim and Background: Periodontal diseases are among the most prevalent oral conditions and can significantly impact quality of life if untreated. While toothbrushing remains the cornerstone of plaque control, it inadequately cleans interdental spaces, necessitating the use of additional aids such as floss, interdental brushes, and water flossers. Advanced devices, including power-driven interdental aids, have demonstrated superior plaque removal and patient compliance compared to conventional floss. However, awareness and usage among Indian dental students remain underexplored. This pilot study aimed to assess knowledge, awareness, and usage patterns of advanced flossing techniques among undergraduate dental students. Method: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 234 BDS students (3rd year, final year, and interns) at A.B. Shetty Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore. The validated 19-item questionnaire assessed awareness, self-reported usage, and perceptions of advanced interdental aids. Results: While 91.9% of participants were aware of interdental aids, only 25.3% flossed daily. Awareness of water flossers was high (78.2%), but correct usage knowledge was limited (28.6%). Cost, lack of training, and discomfort were the main barriers to adoption. Most respondents (88.5%) stated they would recommend water flossers. Conclusion: Although awareness of advanced flossing techniques was high, regular and correct usage was suboptimal. Structured training and cost-effective solutions are needed to improve adoption. Clinical Significance: Enhancing practical skills and awareness among dental students can improve patient education, plaque control, and periodontal health outcomes. |
