| Abstract | Gingival recession refers to the apical migration of the gingival margin, resulting in root surface exposure and compromised aesthetics and function. Among the etiological factors, tooth malposition, occlusal trauma, and inadequate arch space play significant roles. Traumatic occlusion may not only accelerate gingival tissue loss but also influence tooth position due to abnormal occlusal forces. This case report highlights the multidisciplinary management of gingival recession caused by occlusal trauma in a young patient. An 18-year-old systemically healthy female presented with gingival recession on the mandibular left central incisor, associated with severe crowding in the anterior segment. Orthodontic correction was undertaken using rapid maxillary expansion (RME) followed by comprehensive alignment to relieve crowding and establish proper occlusion. After completion of orthodontic therapy, the patient underwent periodontal root coverage surgery to address the exposed root surface and enhance esthetic and functional outcomes. The combined approach resulted in successful resolution of the gingival defect and long-term stability of periodontal health. This case emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary strategy involving both orthodontic and periodontal interventions in the management of gingival recession caused by traumatic occlusion. |
