Inefficient Digital Forensic Tool Autopsy Regime in India

Author(s) Adv. Sharmistha De Das
Country India
Abstract Digital forensics constitutes a critical pillar in modern criminal justice, especially in addressing cybercrime. Among the tools commonly employed, Autopsy, an open-source digital forensic platform, has gained widespread use due to its cost-effectiveness and accessibility. However, within the Indian context, overreliance on Autopsy has revealed notable inefficiencies. This article critically evaluates the limitations of autopsy in the Indian forensic landscape by situating the discussion within historical, legal, and institutional perspectives. Employing a mixed-methods approach incorporating Likert-scale surveys of forensic professionals, in-depth analysis of five landmark cases, and statistical visualization of survey results, the article demonstrates that tool inefficiency, infrastructural inadequacies, and insufficient training collectively impede effective evidence collection, analysis, and judicial admissibility.
