| Abstract | The development of innovative drug delivery systems has revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on improving therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance. Among these advancements, fast dissolving oral films (FDOFs) have emerged as an effective alternative to traditional solid dosage forms such as tablets and capsules. These films dissolve quickly in the oral cavity, bypassing first-pass metabolism and enhancing drug bioavailability.Fast dissolving films are particularly beneficial for populations with difficulty swallowing, including paediatric, geriatric, and psychiatric patients. Their ease of administration, rapid onset of action, and non-invasive nature make them ideal for conditions requiring immediate drug release, such as hypertension, angina pectoris, pain management, and allergic reactions. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the formulation, advantages, and applications of FDOFs. It discusses the methods of drug extraction, preformulation studies, medication alternatives, and case studies that highlight their effectiveness. A specific case study on Ivabradine and Bisoprolol fast dissolving films is also examined to demonstrate their potential in cardiovascular therapy. The review concludes by addressing the challenges and future prospects of fast dissolving films in modern drug delivery systems. |
